Whether it’s your console, gaming PC, laptop, hair straighteners, tablet or phone, it’s worth thinking about how you can protect them in case something goes wrong.
Our Contents cover for renters
Our Contents Insurance covers you for theft or damage to your things if something happens to them in the home you’re renting. If the worst happens, and your house isn’t fit to live in, we’ll pay for you to stay somewhere else until it gets sorted.
Our Contents cover is flexible, so you can take it with you if you move home.
You don’t need to have contents cover by law in the UK, but it can help you protect the stuff that’s important to you. And it might even be a condition of your rental agreement.
Contents Insurance at Clubcard Prices
Choose Tesco Contents Insurance to protect your personal belongings and save money with your Clubcard.
Do I need renters insurance?
Contents insurance can help with the cost of repairing or replacing the things you own in a rented home. For example, if they’re lost, stolen or damaged.
You don’t have to have insurance by law, but it might be part of your rental agreement. And it means you won’t be out of pocket if something goes wrong.
Do I need tenants liability cover?

The benefits of renters insurance
Contents insurance covers your belongings in case of fire, theft, flood or vandalism. And with Tesco Contents Insurance for renters, you’re covered for other things as well. Like accidental damage to TVs, tablets and laptops.
You can also add optional extras to your policy, like Bicycle Cover and cover for things away from home.
What’s not covered by renters insurance?
Contents insurance covers sudden, unexpected events. It doesn’t cover gradual wear and tear. And most policies won’t usually cover poor maintenance or deliberate damage either.
Policy limitations
Monetary limits, excesses and exclusions will apply to your policy. So it’s best to check them carefully. For example:
Limits on high-value items - like jewellery, watches or laptops. If an item’s worth more than the limit, you’ll need to list it separately, so it’s properly covered.
Security conditions - like locking doors and windows.
Occupancy rules - you might not be covered if you leave your home unoccupied for longer than you’re allowed to.
Your excess - this is the amount you’ll have to pay towards a claim.
For full details of cover, it’s always best to check the policy booklet.
How much renters insurance do I need?
It might be worth making a list of your belongings and what they’re worth, so you can work out how much cover you need. Make a note of bigger things like bikes, furniture, gadgets and valuables. And don’t forget the smaller things - they can add up fast.
Tesco Contents Insurance for renters comes with flexible contents cover. That means the amount of cover can be tailored to suit you - up to £50,000, £75,000 or £100,000.
You can also take your cover with you if you move home.

Contents Insurance for renters FAQs
You don’t need to cancel your policy or start a new one. Just let us know your new address and any changes to your home details, and we’ll update your policy, so your cover continues without a break.
Moving home can be stressful, so here’s some extra peace of mind during your move. Your contents are protected against accidental loss or damage while a professional removal firm is moving them. This cover applies from your current home to any other private property you’re moving to within the UK. Items are also covered while in temporary storage for up to 72 hours.

Buildings insurance is designed to protect the structure of a property - things like walls, roof and permanent fixtures. If you rent, you don’t own the building, so you’re not responsible for insuring it. That responsibility sits with your landlord.
However, you can still protect what matters to you. Contents insurance is available whether you rent or own your home. It covers your personal belongings - such as furniture, electronics and clothing - against risks like theft, fire or water damage.
See our policy documents to check more of what is and what isn’t covered.
Like buildings insurance, Home Emergency Cover is designed for property owners because it protects the structure and essential systems of the home - such as plumbing, heating and roofing. These are the landlord’s responsibility, not yours as a tenant.
You can’t cover items you’ve borrowed or rented because they don’t belong to you. Insurance is designed to protect things you own, as you have an insurable interest in them. If you don’t own the item, you can’t claim for its loss or damage.
However, contents insurance provides cover for the amount you legally have to pay for damage to the landlord’s fixtures and fittings as standard - up to £10,000. This means you get all the protection you need when you’re renting.
